چکیده

This paper characterizes the necessary and sufficient conditions for tensegrity equilibria. Static models of tensegrity structures are reduced to linear algebra problems, after first characterizing the problem in a vector space where direction cosines are not needed. This is possible by describing the components of all member vectors. While our approach enlarges (by a factor of 3) the vector space required to describe the problem, the advantage of enlarging the vector space makes the mathematical structure of the problem amenable to linear algebra treatment. Using the linear algebraic techniques, many variables are eliminated from the final existence equations. 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Loop Shape Control of Stable Unit Tensegrity Structures

Tensegrity deployment is considered herein as a tracking control problem. Therefore, the required trajectories should be feasible for a given structure. For tensegrity structures, this means that in every desired configuration, the structure has to satisfy tensegrity conditions, which require strings to be in tension, and the structure to be stable. To define an open-loop deployment control law...

A General Class of Tensegrity Structures: Topology and Prestress Equilibrium Analysis

In this paper, we define a general class of tensegrity structures consisting of both compression members (ie bars) and tensile members (ie cables). For a given number N of bars, we define the topological structure which is necessary to establish a tensegrity. Necessary and sufficient conditions for prestress mechanical equilibria of the tensegrity are then provided in terms of a nonlinear funct...

Equilibrium Conditions of Class 1 Tensegrity Structures

ABSTRACT. Static models of tensegrity structures are reduced to linear algebra problems, after first characterizing the problem in a vector space where direction cosines are not needed. That is, we describe the components of all member vectors as opposed to the usual practice of characterizing the statics problem in terms of the magnitude of tension vectors. While our approach enlarges (by a fa...

Designing an Irregular Tensegrity as a Monumental Object

A novel and versatile numerical technique to solve a self-stress equilibrium state is adopted herein as a form-finding procedure for an irregular tensegrity structure. The numerical form-finding scheme of a tensegrity structure uses only the connectivity matrix and prototype tension coefficient vector as the initial guess solution. Any information on the symmetrical geometry or other predefined...

Kinetostatic Analysis and Solution Classification of a Planar Tensegrity Mechanism

Tensegrity mechanisms have several interesting properties that make them suitable for a number of applications. Their analysis is generally challenging because the static equilibrium conditions often result in complex equations. A class of planar one-degree-of-freedom (dof) tensegrity mechanisms with three linear springs is analyzed in detail in this paper. The kinetostatic equations are derive...
